What is micro-learning?

“Micro-learning” processes cover a time span from a few seconds to 15 minutes or more. It refers to short-term learning activities on small learning units, or discrete chunks of learning materials (including text, slides, demonstrations, videos, audios, VR/AR etc). In the contemporary mobile/Web society, micro learning pertains to fragmented knowledge from huge amount of open education resources, like MOOC.

Why micro-learning?

Compared to the traditional hour-long e-learning, micro learning features higher flexibility, and more importantly, it has less time limitation. In other words, it can be started at anytime, whereas it may also be terminated at anytime, and at anywhere with access to Internet.

Micro learning also conforms to human brain’s cognitive processes in learning with attention to improved engagement.
Small learning bytes in micro learning are not only feasible to be acquired on-the-go, but also requiring less effort and aiding quick assimilation. They reduce the dependency on a fixed time slot and prevent people from being pulling out of their daily work to spend a large block of time on updating knowledge.
